What is copyright law?

Copyright refers to the legal right of the owner of intellectual property. Copyright law gives creators of original material the exclusive right to further use and duplicate that material for a given amount of time, at which point the copyrighted item becomes public domain.

Copyright, a form of intellectual property law, protects original works of authorship including literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works, such as poetry, novels, movies, songs, computer software, and architecture. … See Circular 1, Copyright Basics, section “What Works Are Protected.”
